Requirements to register for a social insurance number in Bermuda: 

·         a completed application

·         a photocopy of

o   your birth certificate or passport, if you are Bermudian

o   your birth certificate or passport and your immigration spousal letter, if married to a Bermudian

·         your birth certificate or passport and your work permit, if a non-Bermudian

 

Important Information

You are eligible to register for a Social Insurance number at age 18

·         The Social Insurance Number is valid for your lifetime

·         To ensure accurate record-keeping, please inform the Department promptly of any changes to your name or address.

·         Social Insurance deductions are required during any probationary periods of employment

·         Students in full-time education are not required to pay contributions into the Contributory Pension Fund.

·         If your employment is less than 4 hours a week, you are not required to pay into the Contributory Pension Fund.

·         It is important to regularly review your record of contributions, especially when transitioning to a new job or approaching retirement age.

·         It is important that you keep a record of your employers, employment dates and proof of employment.

In some circumstances, you can be exempted from contributing to the Contributory Pension Fund. Apply to the Director of Social Insurance if you are a:

 

  • student who works during periods of vacation or public holidays (you can have your employer apply on your behalf);
  • person who earns less than $3,000 per year;
  • widow or widower currently receiving a widow’s or widower’s benefit;
  • you are working less than 4 hours a week; 
  • non-resident who has worked for less than 26 consecutive weeks in Bermuda.
